Benjamin Franklin wasn’t all the time a diplomat
For many years it was interesting to observe the finesse with which President Franklin D. Roosevelt permitted males he fired to save their faces. Virtually invariably his resigning mind trusters and others sent him friendly-sounding notes beginning, “Pricey Frank . . . ,” and the letters, accompanied by a statement of the President’s deep remorse at shedding such a fantastic and trustworthy associate, got to the press. Just once, when the President didn’t use the face-saving approach, he had a harmful and very bitter enemy on his hands. That was when he brazenly ousted Arthur E. Morgan, chairman of the TV A, for “contumacy.”
Benjamin Franklin wasn’t at all times a diplomat. One other fashionable vendor in this category is the standard Mississauga blinds which are made of 2″ slats. There was a time in his younger years when he didn’t acknowledge the desirability of letting the other fellow save his face and defend his own feeling of self-esteem. His carefully worked-out system, as good at present as when he first adopted it, has typically been presented as philosophy, but I threat repeating the system from his Autobiography as a master course in face saving.
”I made it a rule to forbear all direct contradiction to the feelings of others, and all positive assertion of my own. I even forbade myself the use of each phrase of expression within the language that imported a set opinion, corresponding to actually, undoubtedly, etc., and I adopted, instead of them, I conceive, I apprehend, or I think about a factor to be so and so; or it so appears to me at present. “When one other asserted something that I thought an error, I denied myself the pleasure of contradicting him abruptly, and of showing immediately some absurdity in his proposition: and in answering I began by observing that in certain cases or circumstances his opinion would be right, but within the current case there appeared or appeared to me some difference, etc.
”I quickly discovered the benefit of this transformation in my manner; the conversations I engaged in went on extra pleasantly. The modest approach through which I proposed my opinions procured them a readier reception and fewer contradiction; I had less mortification after I was discovered to be within the mistaken, and I extra simply prevailed with others to give up their mistakes and be part of with me after I occurred to be within the right. And to this habit (after my character for integrity) I believe it principally owing that I had early a lot weight with my fellow residents after I proposed new establishments, or alterations within the previous, and a lot affect in public councils after I became a member; for I was but a foul speaker, never eloquent, subject to a lot hesitation in my alternative of phrases, hardly right in language, and but I usually carried my points.”
